Honeywell Bluetooth Barcode Scanner Troubleshooting Guide

This guide well help assist you in troubleshooting common issues with the Bluetooth barcode scanner. These scanners are typically located in patient rooms and can be located on WOWs in the unit. The most common issues encountered based upon feedback from staff in the units are:

  1. The scanner not reading barcodes
  2. The scanner inputting incorrect information in EPIC
  3. The scanner not charging/not powering on

The following steps should be performed in order and can be used to address the most common issues stated above. If you are experiencing a different type of issue not listed here please reach out to 5-HELP to submit a ticket.

Troubleshooting Steps

Place the scanner in the base. Now looking at the base that the scanner is placed in:

Is the red LED on? (the red LED should always stay on)

If the red LED is not illuminated, check that:

  1. The USB cable is properly connected to the workstation. You can try switching the USB cable to a different USB port.

Is the green LED on?

*Note that either a solid green or flashing green LED light is okay. More on this later

If the green LED is not illuminated, check that:

  1. The screw that holds the end cap on the base of the scanner is tight.

  2. The scanner is correctly placed in the base.
  3. If the battery is not sufficiently charged you may not see the green LED. In this case please leave scanner in base for 15 minutes and check again. If the scanner is properly placed in the base and still no green LED after 15 minutes, call 5-HELP to submit a ticket.

After you have verified that the red LED is on and the battery is charged, the next step is to verify that the scanner is paired to the base. There are two ways to verify this:

  1. Scan the barcode located on the base of the scanner.

  1. If there is not a barcode on the base of the scanner you can also place the scanner in the base and it will pair automatically.

The next thing to check is to make sure that the scanner is programmed correctly to transmit data to EPIC.

  1. Open a Word document.
  2. Scan any barcode (your badge, barcode on top of specimen label printer, etc)
  3. Verify that there is a backslash (\) before and after the data you scanned:

in the example above, my badge id is 534669

If the resulting scan is missing the backslash in the front or the back of your data it will not transfer correctly to EPIC. To fix this you will need to scan the EPIC scanner setup card that is located in the patient room or by using the sticker on the side of the label printer.  Scan both setup barcodes at least twice.

If you have performed all the troubleshooting above and are still experiencing an issue, the scanner will need to be reset to factory defaults. When you perform a factory reset you will need to pair the scanner to the base and also use the barcode scanner setup card before it will work correctly.

  1. First scan the Remove Custom Defaults barcode.
  2. Now scan the Activate Defaults barcode.
  3. The scanner and base will reset. Once the scanner is powered back on pair it to the base.
  4. Scan the Barcode scanner setup card.
  5. Perform test scan.

Additional Information

In a situation where the troubleshooting steps above have not resolved your scanner issue there should be WOWs in your unit equipped with either a bluetooth scanner or a tethered scanner. This can be used in the event of hardware failure in a patient room until your issue can be resolved. The bluetooth scanner has a range of 60ft.
