FLIR Latitude - Windows Updates Best Practices

Windows Updates Best Practices

Product Group: Latitude

What are best practices for Upgrading Windows Server OS with Latitude VMS installed?

Setup Windows Updates in Control Panel:
• Begin by going to Control Panel and opening Windows Update. In the Windows Update window on the left side click the Change settings link.
• Select “Never check for updates (not recommended)”.
• Make sure the checkbox for “Include recommended updates when downloading, installing, or notifying me about updates”.
• Also ensure the checkbox for “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” is selected.
• Always update manually. Never select auto download and install updates.

Download the updates.
• Downloading updates ahead of time will avoid downtime and make the process faster.
• Select all critical updates.
• Always review optional updates before installing.

Backup Database.
• In Admin Center select Servers, right click on Directory Server role and select “backup”.

• Refer to FAQ 4922 which covers backup through Command Line Interface or Query Express.

Stop all Dvtel services.
• Do Not Skip. This step is crucial to avoid having issues with the VMS while running the update.

Run Windows Updates. Reboot if needed and always START All Services once all the updates are complete. The services by default, are set to start on their own after every server reboot.
However, they must be stopped again if subsequent updates are to be installed post server reboot.

• For All in One systems, stop all services, run Windows Updates and start Services.
• For systems with multiple Directories and Archivers we recommend the following to reduce downtime:
    1. Perform manual synchronization Primary Directory with the failover directory server(s).
    2. Manually failover the Main Directory Server before stopping its services to install updates. Failback to the Main Directory Server once the updates are complete.
    3. Similarly, if the system has failover archivers in place, perform manual failover of the primary archiver server before stopping its services to install updates. Failback the cameras to the primary archiver server once the updates are complete.

Disclaimer:
• We While we encourage our customers to install latest windows updates, we highly recommend upgrading the UVMS as well when newer updates or major versions are released by FLIR. This will ensure that you are running the version which has already been tested and verified to run with the latest and greatest windows patches.
