Add a Workstation to Epic

In Epic, a workstation is a printer or device. In some cases, you will need to add a printer to Epic if the printer is missing or not available in Epic. You will use Epic’s TXT environment to add the printer. TXT is a different instance and a copy of the Epic Hyperdrive used for building within Epic.

Try it out

Within the TXT environment, you will mostly be using your keyboard to type in TXT. As you navigate through TXT you will notice that the bottom pane displays prompts (in yellow) that require responses. TXT will also display a series of menu options to choose from or fields to complete. Once you locate the menu option needed, type the number beside the option to proceed to that menu.

  1. First, you will need to launch PRD Text Access

Important Note

If TXT pulls up another workstation it is because it has a similar name. Press PgUp to return to the previous screen. Place your cursor at the end of the printer’s name and press the space bar until the cursor is far from the workstation name and press Enter. It should allow you to create a new workstation (this is a trick to bypass this issue). If it does not allow you to create a new record and keep open a record, place a ticket in FreshService.

If TXT pulls up the exact workstation name, that means it has already been added. Restart the device. If restarting the device does not work place a ticket in FreshService.

  1. Once it asks, “Would you like to create a new workstation? Type in Y for Yes, and press Enter twice. TXT will display a prompt letting you know the ID number that will be assigned to the new printer in Epic. Press Enter.

  1. After creating the workstation in Epic, the next screen is where you will fill out all the details to build the printer record in Epic. (Use your TAB key to move to the next field).
  2. Enter the following information:
    • Workstation name: (You will leave the name of Printer and ensure that it is correct naming convention) Ex: Test-1-Test123
    • Type: Workstation
    • Identifier: This will be the same as the workstation name but remove the dashes. Ex: Test1Test123

Important Note

If you enter the identifier which produces an error saying it has already been used, and you have confirmed that it matches the printer’s name that you are creating, it means the wrong printer has been assigned to that identifier and needs to be corrected. Place a FreshService ticket for this to be escalated.

  1. Under department, you can enter any department number Ex: 18 and press Enter
  2. Press Shift+F7 to exit.
